The South African entertainment industry is once again reeling from shock and grief following the tragic death of DJ and comedian Peter “Mashata” Mabuse.
Mabuse, known as ‘The Noise Maker’, was fatally shot in the early hours of Sunday, 21 April, while driving near the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Soshanguve campus.
While returning from a gig at Epozini Lifestyle in Soshanguve, gunmen opened fire on Mabuse and an unknown passenger. Despite being rushed to a nearby medical facility, Mabuse succumbed to his injuries at Akasia Hospital.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed that the shooting involved two men aged 46 and 45 and that police have opened dockets for murder and attempted murder. The motive behind the attack remains unclear as authorities continue to pursue leads.
Mabuse’s death has sent shockwaves through the South African entertainment industry, especially considering its proximity to the tragic killing of DJ Sumbody and the attempted murder of DJ Vettys. These incidents have stirred controversy and raised questions about the safety of artists and entertainers in the country.
DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, was fatally shot in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on 20 November 2022, while returning home after a performance. Mashata, a close friend of Sumbody, had served as the MC at his memorial service, drawing a sombre connection between the two tragedies.

The circumstances surrounding DJ Sumbody’s death remain shrouded in mystery, with no arrests made in connection to the shooting. This lack of resolution has fueled speculation, which has only been heightened with the recent murders and attempted murders of DJ Sumbody’s associates.
Adding to the unease is the attempted murder of DJ Vettys, another associate of DJ Sumbody, just months after DJ Sumbody’s death on 29 January 2024. DJ Vettys narrowly survived the attack, but the incident has left him in critical condition, further heightening tensions among performers and their supporters.
Amidst the sorrow and apprehension, social media has been flooded with tributes to Mabuse, with fans and colleagues mourning the loss of the talented entertainer.
