Diversity was the clear winner at The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards last night. Kicking off the 2025 awards season with a bang at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, this year’s Globes saw major wins for a Spanish-language musical, a Japanese-language drama and a Brazilian actress nudging out more traditional fare. Often called “Hollywood’s Party of the Year,” the awards brought together the biggest stars from film and television to celebrate the best in film and television over the past year.
It was a night full of glitz, glamour, and excitement as comedian Nikki Glaser made her debut as the show’s first solo female host. Known for her cheeky humour (especially after her hilarious performance at Netflix’s The Roast of Tom Brady), Glaser had the not-so-easy task of keeping the crowd and millions of viewers at home entertained as Hollywood’s finest gathered to toast the best in entertainment.
Emilia Perez, a Spanish-language musical crime comedy about a drug lord who transitions to life as a woman, was the night’s big winner. The film took home four of the ten awards it was nominated for, including Best Film in the Musical or Comedy category, beating out Anora, Challengers, A Real Pain, The Substance, and even last year’s musical phenomenon, Wicked. Zoe Saldana received the award for Best Supporting Actress – Musical or Comedy.
Demi Moore won Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for her visceral performance in The Substance, which was surprisingly her first individual acting award in 45 years.
“Oh, wow! I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now. I’ve been doing this a long time, like, over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor. And I am just so humbled and so grateful,” the 62-year-old actress said in her speech.
Shōgun and The Brutalist were also big winners in the film drama categories. Immigrant drama The Brutalist took the top spot, winning Best Film – Drama. Adrien Brody received the Best Actor – Drama award for his performance in the movie as a Hungarian Holocaust survivor. In this category, the actor beat: Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown, Daniel Craig for Queer, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, and Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice.
Shōgun, set in feudal Japan and featuring a mostly Japanese cast, dominated the drama categories on the TV side, taking home Best TV Series and individual awards for actors Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Tadanobu Asano.
But the real shocker of the night? Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres beat out A-listers like Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, and Pamela Anderson for the Best Actress – Drama award for I’m Still Here.
It was a triumphant night for the Globes after being embroiled in years of scandal over racism and corruption. In 2021, a Los Angeles Times exposé revealed the awards, run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, didn’t have a single Black member across their voting body.
Today, their 330+ member voting body is now 60% racially and ethnically diverse: 26% Latino/Latina, 13% Asian, 11% Black, and 9% Middle Eastern, representing 75+ countries of origin, Forbes notes.
