It’s been a whirlwind of political drama over at the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) as former EFF heavyweights make their way to former president Jacob Zuma’s camp. Former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu has taken the role of Secretary-General in the MKP. But this isn’t the only headline-grabber. Let’s unpack the chaos — there’s plenty of it!

Shivambu steps in

First off, the big news: Floyd Shivambu, after resigning from the EFF in August, is now the Secretary-General of the MKP. Just a few months ago, Shivambu was standing alongside his old comrade Julius Malema, who was visibly shaken when the two announced their political split. It’s been a whirlwind journey for Shivambu, who originally joined MKP as the National Organiser but has now stepped into the SG role.

Shivambu’s appointment came before Sifiso Maseko’s resignation on 4 November. Maseko, who had barely warmed the seat as Secretary-General, cited the need to return to his previous job at the Gauteng health department. Maseko’s exit marks another chapter in the never-ending saga of the MKP’s revolving door of secretaries-general. His predecessor, Arthur Zwane, was also shown the door after trying to resign — and failing.

Mpofu joins the party (Literally)

In another twist, Advocate Dali Mpofu, who was once the EFF’s chairperson, has jumped ship to join the MKP. The man who’s made a career out of representing Zuma in court is now officially part of Zuma’s political home. Mpofu, known for his courtroom theatrics, dismissed any notions of animosity, stating, “There’s nothing personal In This. Not anything done against any particular person. It’s something I’m doing for my people.” Despite his calm facade, this move has certainly raised eyebrows across the political landscape, especially considering his high-profile defence of Zuma in various legal cases.

EFF leader Julius Malema, not one to shy away from the drama, took to social media with cryptic tweets hinting at more high-profile resignations. “Only two more of your favourites remain,” he tweeted, stirring the pot even further. Could this be the start of an EFF exodus?

Zuma’s courtroom battles

Of course, Zuma wouldn’t be without a legal battle brewing in the background. This time, it’s a fight over bank accounts. Ten disgruntled MKP MPs are dragging Zuma to the Gauteng High Court, accusing him of pocketing party funds. According to court papers, these MPs allege they were required to pay up to R10,000 each into Zuma’s personal Capitec account as a show of loyalty. Now, they want their money back, and they’re not leaving any stone unturned. They’ve even requested that Zuma’s bank statements be frozen until the case is resolved.

This legal move is the latest in a series of courtroom dramas for the MKP. Just a few months ago, 18 MPs were ousted from Parliament to make room for Zuma’s handpicked replacements, including some familiar names from state-owned enterprises. The 10 who are now suing claim they were left high and dry, forced to leave their jobs and parliamentary salaries behind.

Who’s Next in the MKP Musical Chairs?

With Shivambu’s promotion, the MKP now has another vacancy to fill — the position of National Organiser. Given the current musical chairs within the party, we can only speculate who will be next in line for this ever-changing roster. And while Shivambu’s move has undoubtedly shaken things up, the party still faces internal strife and the looming threat of more defections.

All eyes are on the MKP as it navigates these turbulent waters. With high-profile members jumping ship from the EFF to join the fledgling MKP, Zuma seems to be consolidating power. But with a courtroom battle on his hands and a party that’s seen more shuffling than a deck of cards at a casino, the MKP has a long way to go before finding stability.
