The Springbok women’s team came heartbreakingly close to a victory in their WXV2 clash against Australia on Saturday, at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, losing 33-26 in the final minutes.
While the score reflected a loss, their performance against a powerhouse team like Australia highlights the incredible progress the Bok Women have made. “I’m so, so proud of them, we have played Australia three times in the past and never managed to score a try against them,we scored four today and were held up for a fifth,” said coach Swys de Bruin after the match.
Adding to the support for the team, Siya Kolisi proudly showed his encouragement for the Springbok Women, cheering them on while wearing their jersey. When asked about the significance of his presence, Kolisi emphasised the importance of standing together: “I think the women have been supporting us for a very long time, and I believe it’s our duty. We all play and represent our country, and they deserve the same support we get every single weekend.” His gesture shows the unity and mutual respect between the men’s and women’s teams, as they both proudly carry the flag for South Africa.
Thank you, Cape Town ❤️

Springbok Women’s supporters flooded Twitter with praise following the team’s close contest against Australia. User @Xaoh_Ami tweeted, “Great effort, Swys is doing a great job with this team,” acknowledging their improvement under the guidance of coach Swys de Bruin.
Another supporter, @agcobile, shared their excitement, saying, “These ladies are dangerously growing into something. Aus is very strong and Tier 1 women’s rugby, and they outdid themselves.” The same sentiment was echoed by @mhayisesdu1, who wrote, “Great game ladies, the second half was much better, we are improving every game.” Fans are clearly standing behind the Bok Women as they continue to show growth and resilience.

In another milestone, Libbie Janse van Rensburg made history as the first Bok Women’s player to reach 200 international points just ahead of the WXV2 kickoff in Cape Town. But her ambitions stretch far beyond the field. “I would like to stay in women’s rugby after I am done playing,” she shared, adding that she hopes to inspire girls. “There is so much I can do off the field to grow the game in South Africa, whether it’s in the union or even stepping into refereeing.”
Looking ahead, the final round of matches will take place over the weekend, and with Scotland and Australia facing off, a victory over Italy could still propel South Africa to the top of the standings.
We’re hoping Kolisi has inspired more South Africans to show up for the Springbok Women, who deserve our support just as much as the men’s team does.
