The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) biggest commercial radio station, Metro FM, held the 18th Metro FM Awards in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, over the weekend.

The show, hosted by rapper ProVerb and TV presenter Luthando LootLove Shosha, featured a reunion performance from the iconic Kwaito group Boom Shaka. Group member, Thembi Seete, said that the performance reminded her of what it was like to perform with former group member, the late Lebo Mathosa. Mathosa, a founding member of Boom Shaka, died in a car accident in 2006

Internationally acclaimed singer and Grammy award winner Tyla was the most nominated person at this year’s MMAs, with six nominations for the song ‘Water’. She was nominated for Song of the Year, Best Female Artist, Best Music Video, Best Viral Challenge and Artist of the Year. She only managed to win the Global Icon award.

Amapiano DJ Kabza De Small was one of the night’s biggest winners. He and vocalist Mthunzi won the awards for Best Produced Album, Best Collaboration, Best Amapiano, and Song of the Year for their album Isimo, which features their wildly successful song, Imithandazo, which features Kabza’s long-time collaborator DJ Maphorisa, Young Stunna, Sizwe Alakine and Umthakathi Kush.

Famous DJ Oskido was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the South African scene. Boom Shaka was also honoured. “This award is not just for me; it’s for everyone who has been part of this incredible journey, from kwaito to house, amapiano, and the entire explosion of South African music that has captivated the world,” said Oskido.

TitoM and Yuppe won the Best Viral Challenge for their song Tshwala Bam, which features S.N.E. and EeQue. The song was danced to globally, including by celebrities like Jason Derulo. See the complete list of the winners here.
