South African sports shines bright on a global stage once more, with another sports star breaking records and flying the country’s flag high.
This time, it is 23-year-old sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi. He broke the 200m indoor national record when he finished second in the 200m final at the Big 12 Conference Indoor Championship in Texas a few days ago. He was running for the University of Houston (where he is a student), at an indoor track and field meeting; and finished the race in a time of 20.41 seconds.
The record was previously held by countryman Ncincilili Titi in a time of 20.45 seconds, which had stood since 2018. Shaun also won a silver medal at the Texas meet in the 60m race. He is the South African 60-metre indoor U20 national record holder and the South African U20 national 100-metre record holder.
