On Saturday, 24 February, Hollywood gathered for the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
The atmosphere in the room carried a distinct energy, notably altered by the backdrop of the recent 118-day strike, the most extensive actors’ strike in Hollywood’s film and TV studio history, which reached a tentative agreement in November last year.
In his introduction, actor and host for the evening, Idris Elba, paid tribute to those who “stood up in solidarity” with the SAG-AFTRA union members last year.
Christopher Nolan’s hit biopic Oppenheimer dominated this year’s Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, with actor Cillian Murphy and co-star Robert Downey Jr. winning Best Movie Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
Oppenheimer went on to clinch the evening’s most sought-after award, Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In addition to this weekend’s win, Oppenheimer’s continued success in this year’s award season further bolsters “the movie’s chances to score the best picture trophy at next month’s Oscars,” according to Reuters.
Among the array of noteworthy victories of the evening, The Bear distinguished itself by securing Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Adding to the series’ success, cast members Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri scooped up Best Male and Female Actor in a Comedy Series.
Amidst an evening filled with accolades and admiration for Hollywood’s top actors and directors, for many viewers, the highlight of the evening was a surprise reunion of The Devil Wears Prada cast.
The iconic trio, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt, stole the show while presenting Jeremy Allen White with his well-deserved award in what many consider a standout moment of the evening.
