We have a date! President Cyril Ramaphosa announced last night that the 2024 National Elections will be held on Wednesday, 29 May 2024 (no long weekend for us, buddies).

The 2024 elections coincide with South Africa’s 30 years of freedom and democracy. The President called on all eligible voters to fully participate in “this important and historic milestone of our democratic calendar.”

The President said he had consulted with the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and all premiers to discuss the country’s readiness for the elections.

Chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo, speaking to ENCA, said that voter registration will close at midnight this coming Friday.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) responded to the announcement by calling the African National Congress (ANC) to “Bring It On!” They said they are committed to ending 30 years of ANC failure, corruption, and state capture. “The upcoming election is an opportunity for the people of South Africa to choose a path of progress and unite to #RescueSA,” said the party.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) urged their members to vote in order to fight corruption. “On the 29th of May 2024, #VoteEFF for hardworking, delivering and accountable public servants,” said one of their tweets.

The Freedom Front Plus just simply welcomed the announcement of the date.
