Planning a seaside escape to Brighton Beach in Nelson Mandela Bay? You may need a backup plan, the popular beach has been temporarily closed after untreated sewage from the Fishwater Flats Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) has spilt into the sea.
Metro spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya has attributed the spill to ongoing theft and vandalism at the plant, which has plagued the facility for years. Elevated E. coli levels in the seawater prompted the closure, and the beach will only reopen once testing confirms it’s safe. Infrastructure and Engineering MMC Yolisa Pali-Jongilanga recommends checking out other beaches in the area.
Sadly, this isn’t the first time Fishwater Flats has made headlines in October, Deputy Water and Sanitation Minister Sello Seitlholo described its dire state, and critics have slammed the Nelson Mandela Bay metro for withholding water quality test results from the public.
On a brighter note, Durban gets ready for the festive influx of 1.3 million visitors, it’s good news that 19 of the city’s beaches are open and ready for some fun in the sun. However, a few popular spots like Anstey’s, Reunion, Battery Beach, and Bay of Plenty are temporarily off-limits due to contamination. While the eThekwini Municipality is on top of things, monitoring the water quality every week, E. coli still poses a bit of a risk.
But it’s not all doom and gloom! While the temporary closure is inconvenient, it’s also an opportunity to brush up on how to stay safe while enjoying South Africa’s stunning coastline this holiday season.
Tips for a Safe and Happy Beach Holiday
1. Beware of Rip Currents
Those gorgeous waves can pack a sneaky punch. Rip currents can pull you out to sea in seconds, so swim only in lifeguard-monitored areas. If in doubt, ask about the conditions before jumping in.
2. Protect Yourself from the Sun
Nobody wants a sunburn as a souvenir, nothing kills the holiday mood faster than a sunburn. Use sunscreen, stay hydrated, and chill in the shade during peak hours to avoid heatstroke.
3. Watch Out for Crime
Unfortunately, theft and muggings can happen, particularly in coastal cities like Gqeberha. Leave valuables at home, stay in busy, well-lit areas, and secure your belongings.
4. Skip the Boozy Dips
A cocktail might sound like a great beach vibe, swimming tipsy but alcohol and swimming don’t mix. Impaired judgment and reduced coordination can quickly turn a fun day into a dangerous one. Save the drinks for later.
5. Respect Marine Life
South Africa’s marine life is magical—and sometimes bitey. The ocean is home to beautiful but sometimes hazardous creatures. Jellyfish stings can be painful, and other marine animals may pose risks if disturbed. Be mindful of local advisories and tread carefully in the water.
