The iconic Mandela name continues to make headlines, not just for its storied legacy. These days, the family is embroiled in a dispute that has stalled renovations to Nelson Mandela’s Houghton residence, leaving it in a state of disrepair. The family drama has reached new heights, with squabbles over everything from the house’s ownership to whether it should be transformed into a museum or remain a private property. And amidst it all, the overgrown lawns and unpaid bills at the property have become a symbol of the ongoing feud.
The latest twist? A renovation project spearheaded by the Collen Mashawana Foundation and the City of Johannesburg was set to restore the home to its former glory, and turn it into a museum, but the Mandela family hit the brakes. While some family members seem eager to preserve the site as a public monument, others are at odds, creating a stalemate that has left Madiba’s house looking like a neglected mansion straight out of a reality show.
In December last year, eNCA reported that the Johannesburg home where the former president died was in a state of complete disrepair, with the different factions of the family refusing to take responsibility for maintaining it.
But this is hardly the first time the Mandela family has been caught up in a public squabble. From the infamous 2013 burial dispute—where Mandla Mandela exhumed the remains of Mandela’s children without informing the family, only to be forced to reinter them after a legal battle—to ongoing arguments about control over the family’s estates, internal rifts have marred the Mandela legacy. Even at Zoleka Mandela’s recent funeral, tensions were high, with disputes breaking out over burial sites.
