It’s the weekend, baby!

As the politicians navigate the labyrinth of a Government of National Unity (GNU), the rest of us can take a breather, at least for now. So, here’s our list of five exciting things to divert your attention from the wild beast that is political drama this weekend. (See what we did there? 🤭)

🔹 Brace yourself for a dance-filled weekend with the latest album from the talented Haitian-Canadian DJ Kaytranada. Released on Friday, his third stereo album, Timeless, is a unique blend of beats and rhythms that are sure to captivate you. This album, arriving five years after his second one, Bubba, which made history by winning the best dance/electronic album at the 2021 Grammy Awards, is a testament to his groundbreaking talent as the first Black and openly gay producer to win in this category since its inception in 2004.

Among the 17 tracks, you’ll find a diverse range of collaborations, including the likes of Anderson .Paak (we’ll save his incredible family story for another day), Childish Gambino, Tinashe, and Ravyn Lenae. Notably, his brother, Lou Phelps, lends his voice to a track titled Call U Up, the third song on this album. With such a star-studded lineup, get ready for a weekend filled with infectious beats and energetic tunes from Kaytranada. 🕺

🔹 In the mood for something more romantic? Netflix has you covered. How To Ruin Love: The Proposal is a spinoff of the wildly popular How To Ruin Christmas series. The series follows young couple Zoleka and Kagiso, played by Sivenathi Mabuya and Bohang Moeko, respectively, as they navigate through family drama, exes and the perfect Valentine’s Day. This South African comedy will leave you in stitches, all the while SBWLing your own love story. And with only four episodes, it’s just bite-sized enough to handle.

🔹 Fresh from the elections, have you ever wondered why many South Africans still support the ANC despite its controversial reputation? South African commentator Malaika Mahlatsi’s book, “Why We Vote for the ANC”, dives into the intricate world of South African politics to uncover the surprising reasons behind this loyalty.

Contrary to popular opinion, Malaika believes that many ANC supporters are aware of the party’s flaws but still believe in its potential for transformation. Focusing on the youth in Gauteng Province, who face staggering inequality, poverty, and unemployment, the book explores what drives their devotion to the ANC through personal stories and in-depth analysis. It’s a thought-provoking read you can sink your teeth into this weekend. 📚

🔹 Bafana Bafana will face Nigeria on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier game. Nigeria’s Super Eagles are eager to win the game, as they’ve only collected two points in the opening two rounds.

Bafana started their campaign with a win over Benin before falling away against Rwanda in their second outing. This game is important for both sides as it will determine who gets to go to the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in North America (Mexico, the USA, and Canada are jointly hosting). Go Bafana GO!!

Whatever you do this weekend, remember to stay warm, as temperatures are set to remain chilly. Most importantly, have fun. We’ve been way too anxious as a country.
