Ah, South Africans. If there’s one thing we know how to do, it’s laugh. How else can we make sense of the political craziness around us? On Wednesday, voters queued in longer-than-usual lines for South Africa’s national and provincial elections. And, of course, we joked about every aspect of it, with some hilarious takes doing the rounds on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Here are some of our favourite tweets.

1. Thumb wars

The all-important thumb pic, with the black mark proving one had voted, quickly flooded social media feeds. We loved this response to one thumb-shamer.

    2. The miseducation of John Steenhuisen

The famous ungovernable puppet Chester Missing had a go at the DA’s leader who famously never studied beyond matric. 😂

    3. Selfie crimes

Ruining our state-owned enterprises and tanking the economy? Terrible. Taking a blurry pic? UNFORGIVABLE.

    4. Elderly millennials under fire

There was a FLURRY of jokes about the elderly millennials among us who still have the discontinued green ID books instead of an ID card. They (attempted) to stand up to the hate.
Ok, but props to that no-doubt exhausted IEC official for pulling off this joke.

    6. Puff and pass

Cyril Ramaphosa has made a number of moves in his capacity as state president ahead of the election that were rather dubious – addressing the nation for no apparent reason, signing the National Health Insurance bill. But this one takes the cake.

    7. Special people

Our elders stay spicy. We love it.

Pssst. It’s not too late to vote if you haven’t done so yet. Go to your registered voting station and make your mark!
