Ladies and gents, we have a new hit on our hands 🤭. At least, that’s what North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un wants you to think.
Have you heard the latest “hit” from North Korea’s supreme leader? It’s a bizarre attempt at propaganda. The song is called Friendly Father and showcases Kim Jong Un’s “friendly” side. 👀
The guy who’s been accused of human rights abuses, suppressing his people, and threatening nuclear war is trying to rebrand himself as a “friendly father” figure.
The song was sung at a ceremony celebrating the opening of 10,000 new homes in the capital, Pyongyang.
The song is an over-the-top tribute to Kim Jong Un’s supposed kindness and wisdom. It’s like a parody, but unfortunately, it’s not.
The music video features North Koreans singing their hearts out everywhere, from public transport to construction sites. It also features Kim Jong Un smiling and waving at his adoring people.
Look, we all know North Korea has its fair share of problems – human rights abuses, political repression, and a lack of freedom. So, it’s rich that Kim Jong Un is trying to spin himself as a benevolent leader straight out of the dictator’s playbook.
As South Africans, we’re no strangers to propaganda and attempts to spin a bad situation. But even we wouldn’t dare to pull off something as wild as this. Can you imagine Cyril Ramaphosa releasing a song titled “Friendly Cyril” and expecting us to take it seriously? The closest we’ve come was Jacob Zuma’s Umshini Wami.

Friendly Father is a hilarious attempt at propaganda, but it’s also a sad reminder of the serious issues facing North Korea. So, let’s enjoy the song for what it is – a laughable attempt at spin – but also remember the real struggles of the North Korean people.
