Rapper AKA (real name Kiernan Forbes) was murdered whilst standing outside a restaurant in Florida Road, Durban, on the 10th of February 2023, whilst celebrating his 35th birthday with friends. His friend,  Tebello “Tibs” Motsoane, also lost his life that night. More than a year later, no arrests have been made in this case.

AKA’s former protector, Anwar Khan, has questioned why the police have not released any information pertaining to who they suspect murdered the rapper. He asked, “Who are the suspects?”

Last week, two South African men, who are brothers from Durban, were arrested in Eswatini. It was reported by Eswatini media that they were linked to AKA’s murder, however, police in KwaZulu-Natal were quick to dismiss this claim and said the brothers are not in fact linked to the murder of AKA.

According to KZN police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, “Investigations into this particular matter is at a sensitive stage and the police do not wish to communicate any information that may comprise the investigation process. The AKA and Tibs murder case is a complex one and there was and still are tons of evidential information to be analysed and processed. This is a prosecution-led investigation and when the police have tied all the loose ends and covered all the loopholes, an announcement into the investigation and the progress thereof will be communicated.”

The two suspects that were arrested are linked to a murder and attempted murder case in Berea, Johannesburg, in March 2023, where a passenger was shot and killed, but the driver survived.

More than a year after the tragic murders of AKA and his friend, Tibs, loved ones and fans alike are hoping for a breakthrough in this case.
