Mzansi, we have a date. No, not with that sketchy oke you met on Tinder. We mean a date for the elections. Last night, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the date of the 2024 election, which will take place on Wednesday, 29 May 2024. South Africans took to X (what the kids call Twitter) and TikTok to urge others to register (there is still time) and vote on the 29th. Here are some of our favourite responses:
- “On Wednesdays, we wear pink and vote.”
X user @Sivmabula references the iconic movie Mean Girls to encourage others to register to vote and vote on the day.
get in, loser. we’re voting on the 29th of may 2024 https://t.co/q7Slv4yu1e pic.twitter.com/FMgednQRLp

- Ding Dong, are you voting?
TikTok user @LiamJacobs asked his viewers whether they’d vote with this catchy sound string.

- Anyone bringing cupcakes to the polls?
@mashnotpotatoes, a TikTokker with over 46k followers on the app, shared the news with his followers in this humorous video where he mentions that “Ntate Cupcake”, which you’ll know is our youth’s nickname for the president, has announced the date of the most important election since 27 April 1994.

- Eggscellent analogy?
Comedian Rory Petzer has urged South Africans to vote, using an anecdote about when he worked at a popular chain restaurant, and people would send back overdone sunny-side-up eggs. “There people in the country who take their eggs more seriously than the country,” he said.
CHAMPIONS! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 29th of May! Please! Let’s make South Africa sunny side up again! 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦 pic.twitter.com/Bvy5i8nfl9
