King Charles III has been diagnosed with a form of cancer and is undergoing treatment, Buckingham Palace said yesterday. This is just a week after he was discharged from the hospital following prostate surgery.
While the Palace hasn’t disclosed the type or aggressiveness of the cancer, they have affirmed that the 75-year-old is undergoing treatment and, consequently, will be stepping back from his royal duties, with other senior royals expected to assume his responsibilities.
Charles ascended to the throne following the passing of his mother, the beloved Queen Elizabeth II, after a 70-year reign. His coronation took place in May 2023.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak remarked that doctors had detected the cancer early.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, expressed his sentiments, saying, “I am praying for the King and his family – for God’s comfort and strength in the weeks and months to come.”
US President Joe Biden also encouraged the King. In a tweet on Monday, Biden wrote, “Navigating a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship takes hope and absolute courage. Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying that His Majesty experiences a swift and full recovery.”

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, extended his wishes to the King. “We’re sending him our very best wishes – and hoping for a fast and full recovery,” he stated.
Reportedly, Harry, The Duke of Sussex, Charles’s youngest son, is travelling to the UK to be with his father. Harry, his wife, Meghan Markle, and their children relocated to California.
Charles’ diagnosis comes in the wake of the death of Namibia’s president, Hage Geingob, who disclosed his cancer diagnosis last month and passed away on Sunday morning.
