South African singer Tyla has her first Grammy!
The ‘Water’ singer won a Grammy for Best African Performance, a new category at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Her fellow South African, Trevor Noah, hosted the event for the fourth time!
Tyla beat other African artists, including Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, ASAKE & Olamide and Davido, who featured South African artist Musa Keys.
Tyla’s journey began with her debut single, ‘Getting Late,’ a collaboration with fellow artist Kooldrink that not only dominated the South African charts (and had us in a chokehold on TikTok!) but also caught the attention of Epic Records.
Tyla made history as the first South African artist to grace the US Billboard Hot 100 in over half a century. The last was the late great Bra Hugh Masekela with ‘Grazing In The Grass’ in 1968. The single ‘Water’ also sparked a viral global dance challenge.
Tyla joins an elite group of South African Grammy winners and nominees. These include Miriam Makeba, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela, Wouter Kellerman and Black Coffee. Black Coffee won a Grammy in 2022 for his sixth studio album, Subconsciously.
Tyla’s self-titled debut album will drop in March, and we can’t wait.
