Just when you think #DataHasFallen, Vodacom goes and proves you wrong.
You know how your data gets swallowed by your cell phone company at the end of the month if you haven’t spent it all? New rules implemented by the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) will stop cell phone companies from doing this.
Not so fast, though. Vodacom found a way around this, and wants to charge you R49 for rolling over your data at the end of the month.
There was an uproar on social media on Monday, and Vodacom is now reviewing this policy.
Why does this matter?
SA has some of the most expensive data costs in Africa. Some of our out-of-bundle rates are more than 2000% more expensive than other countries.Business Insider
It’s a huge problem for consumers and the economy as a whole. (It’s also a rip-off, but that’s a story for another day.)
So Icasa changed the rules to stop cell phone companies from taking your data at the end of the month. Companies also have to warn you before switching to out-of-bundle rates. (Business Insider has a good explainer here.)
We wait for Vodacom to change its mind. Or we vote with our feet (and our wallets).
